Tell us about your project 'Duct Taped States':
I carve out shapes and patterns like a duct tape surgeon, pealing and placing colored layers of tape to create texture and design. The forms become abstracted landscapes and surreal decor that play with space, color and shape to reveal the known and the unknown.
The silhouettes of the States offer a departure from the traditional square or rectangle, and often associative imagery can creep into each state based on thematic or traditional attributes. For example, the yellows, browns, and reds of Texas evoke a dry mood, and the ‘pop’ of the red cherry pie in Nevada conjures Las Vegas slots. Throughout, I seek to propel a dialogue between the patterns and regions laid out within and the unique shape outlining the perimeter.
I am currently using duct tape as my medium in appreciation for the formal qualities of its color and material. Instead of liquid and solution, I compose by cutting, peeling, pulling and placing. Perhaps I was inspired, if only somewhat out of tongue and cheek, many years ago shortly after 9/11, by the public messages telling us all to keep a good supply of duct tape on hand. In a way, I figured I would ‘duct tape’ the states in an act of national security...to keep them safe and secure.
